Washer Not Draining: 7 Common Causes

A washing machine that does not drain may have a clogged pump filter, blocked drain hose, failed drain pump, faulty lid switch, damaged door lock, control-system problem, or an obstruction inside the washer.

The correct diagnosis depends on whether the washer is a top-load or front-load model and whether it stops before draining, makes a humming noise, or completes the cycle while leaving water inside the tub.

When a washer will not drain, first check for a kinked drain hose, an overloaded or unbalanced load, and a clogged pump filter if the model has one. If the machine hums but water does not move, the drain pump may be blocked or failing. A washer that will not spin or unlock may also have a lid-switch, door-lock, or control problem.

What Does a Washer Drain Problem Look Like?

A washer may have a drainage problem when:

  • Water remains inside after the cycle.

Is the Washer Not Draining or Not Spinning?

Drain and spin problems often appear together, but they are not the same.

A washer may refuse to spin when it detects water still inside the tub. In that case, the drainage problem must be corrected first.

A washer may also drain normally but fail to spin because of:

  • Lid switch failure.
  • Door lock problem.
