Washer Stops in the Middle of a Cycle: Common Causes

A washing machine that starts normally but stops before finishing the cycle may have a drainage problem, lid or door-lock issue, unbalanced load, water-supply problem, motor overheating, faulty sensor, or control-board failure.

The point where the washer stops is important. A machine that stops while filling has different likely causes from one that stops before draining or spinning.

When Does the Washer Stop?

Before diagnosing the appliance, determine what it was doing immediately before the cycle stopped.

  • one heavy item;
  • waterproof materials;
