Refrigerator Not Cooling After a Power Outage: What to Check

A refrigerator may take several hours to begin cooling normally after a power outage. In many cases, the appliance simply needs time to restart and stabilize.

However, if the lights are on but the refrigerator is not getting cold, the outage may have triggered a control error, damaged an electronic component, interrupted compressor operation, or caused excessive frost and airflow problems.

How Long Does a Refrigerator Take to Cool After a Power Outage?

After power is restored, a refrigerator may need:

  • Several minutes before the compressor starts.
  • Four to six hours before noticeable cooling returns.
  • Up to 24 hours to reach the correct temperature.
  • Longer if the doors were opened repeatedly.
  • Longer if a large amount of warm food was placed inside.

1. Wait for the Compressor Restart Delay

Many refrigerators do not restart the compressor immediately after power returns.

A built-in delay protects the compressor from starting while refrigerant pressures are still uneven. Depending on the model, this delay may last several minutes.
