First: How Long Is Too Long?
There is no single correct preheat time for every oven. Oven design, cavity size, selected temperature, electrical supply, gas ignition timing, rack load, cookware, and door openings all affect how long preheat takes.
Preheat time can naturally increase when the selected temperature is above 350°F, the oven starts from a very cold room temperature, extra racks are installed, heavy cookware is left inside, or the door is opened during preheat.
So an oven taking 17 minutes is not automatically defective. An oven that used to take 12 minutes and now takes 30 deserves much more attention.
Compare Current Preheat Time With the Oven’s Normal Behavior
Rather than comparing your oven with someone else’s appliance, compare it with itself.
Ask whether it preheated faster six months ago, whether the problem began suddenly, whether it started after a repair, whether it started after installation or moving, whether it eventually reaches temperature, and whether cooking performance remains normal afterward.
This distinction helps separate a normal design characteristic from a developing failure.
Test Bake and Broil Separately
This is one of the most useful checks on an electric oven. Many ovens use more than one heating element during preheat. If one element stops working, the oven may still get hot, but much more slowly.
Broil works, but Bake is weak or dead
Suspect the bake side: bake element, bake wiring, bake relay, or hidden bake element.
Bake works, but Broil does not
The oven may still eventually reach temperature, but preheat may become noticeably slower on designs that use the upper element to assist.
Neither heats correctly
Look more broadly at electrical supply, controls, temperature sensing, wiring, and thermal protection.
The important point is that the oven eventually getting hot does not prove every heating component is working.
A Failed Bake Element Can Still Let the Oven Warm Up
This confuses many people. If the main bake element fails but another heating source is still active, the oven may slowly climb in temperature, take twice as long to preheat, struggle to maintain temperature, or cook unevenly.
A visible electric element may show cracks, burned areas, blistering, or separation. A hidden element can fail without anything obvious inside the oven cavity.
Hidden Bake Elements Naturally Preheat More Slowly
Many newer ovens hide the lower heating element beneath the oven floor. This makes cleaning easier and protects the element from spills, but heat must transfer through the oven floor before reaching the cavity.
That slower transfer can be normal. What is not normal is a major increase in preheat time compared with the same oven’s previous performance.
Gas Oven? The Igniter Is One of the Most Important Clues
A gas oven can have a different failure pattern. The igniter may glow without opening the gas valve quickly enough.
That can cause delayed burner ignition, long preheat times, burner cycling problems, or an oven that does not reach temperature.
A glowing igniter is not proof that the igniter is good. The important question is how quickly and reliably the burner lights after the oven calls for heat.
Watch How the Burner Behaves
Useful clues include whether the burner lights promptly, takes a long time to ignite, lights and then shuts off unusually soon, attempts ignition repeatedly, or shows an uneven flame pattern.
A weak ignition system can dramatically extend preheat time even though the oven eventually warms.
Electrical Supply Can Make an Electric Oven Very Slow
An electric range can appear to have power and still have an electrical-supply problem affecting oven performance.
This is especially worth investigating when the oven has always been slow since installation, the appliance was recently moved, or electrical work was recently performed.
The Oven Door Can Add Several Minutes
Every time the oven door opens during preheat, heat escapes. If you are checking temperature every few minutes by opening the door, you may be extending the preheat yourself.
For a fair test, start with a cold oven, set 350°F, keep the door closed, and record when the preheat signal occurs.
A Door That Does Not Seal Properly Is Different
You do not need to open the door for heat to escape. A damaged gasket or misaligned door can continuously leak heat.
Look for a torn gasket, flattened section, door not closing fully, bent hinge, visible gap, or food debris around the seal.
A severe sealing problem can cause both long preheat and poor temperature maintenance afterward.
Remove Unnecessary Items Before Testing
An oven heats everything inside it. Extra thermal mass requires additional energy and time.
Before comparing preheat performance, remove cast-iron pans, pizza stones, baking steels, and unused heavy cookware.
Normal oven racks can remain according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but extra heavy items can meaningfully affect the test.
More Racks Can Increase Preheat Time
Extra oven racks can affect heating performance and preheat behavior. This effect is usually modest and should not explain an oven suddenly taking twice as long as before.
What Does the Preheat Beep Actually Mean?
On some modern ovens, the preheat signal may occur when the cavity has reached a condition considered ready for cooking, not necessarily when every surface and all air inside the oven have stabilized exactly at the selected temperature.
That means preheat beep does not always mean perfect thermal equilibrium. For sensitive baking, allowing a little additional stabilization time may improve consistency.
Do Not Use an Infrared Thermometer to Judge Oven Air Temperature
An infrared thermometer measures surface temperature. It does not directly measure the air temperature inside the oven.
Depending on where it is aimed, it may read an oven wall, rack, pan, glass, or heating element. Those surfaces can be much hotter or colder than the average air temperature.
For temperature evaluation, use an appropriate oven thermometer or professional temperature probe and consider cycling behavior over time rather than a single instant reading.
The Temperature Sensor Can Affect Preheat
Modern ovens use a temperature sensor to tell the control how hot the cavity is. If the sensor reports an incorrect temperature, the control may stop heating too early, delay heating, cycle incorrectly, or display a temperature that does not match reality.
Sensor problems are more likely when long preheat is accompanied by incorrect cooking temperature, large temperature errors, error codes, or inconsistent cycling.
A sensor should be tested against model-specific specifications rather than replaced based on preheat time alone.
Calibration Is Not the First Fix for Slow Preheat
Oven calibration can be appropriate when an oven consistently cooks slightly too hot or too cold. But calibration will not repair a dead element, weak igniter, missing voltage, broken wiring, or bad door seal.
If the oven is taking 30 minutes because one heating source is not operating, changing calibration does not solve the underlying problem.
The Control Board Can Cause Slow Preheat
The electronic control determines when heating components operate. A relay or control problem can result in one element not energizing, intermittent heat, unusually long preheat, failure to maintain temperature, or occasional normal operation after reset.
Control boards can be expensive, so they should not be the first part replaced. A proper diagnosis should first verify heating components, sensor, wiring, and supply voltage.
What if It Preheats Normally Sometimes?
Intermittent slow preheat can be more difficult than a complete failure. Possible clues include one element occasionally failing to energize, an intermittent relay, a gas igniter changing behavior as it ages, a connector heating and losing contact, or a temperature sensor reporting incorrectly.
Try to note cold start versus warm restart, Bake temperature selected, whether Broil works, any error code, and the exact preheat time. Patterns matter.
What if Preheat Became Slow After a Power Outage?
A power interruption can leave some electronic ranges in an unusual control state or produce an error. A single breaker reset according to the manufacturer’s instructions can be useful.
If the slow-preheat problem returns, repeated breaker resets are not a repair.
A Practical Test at 350°F
- Start with the oven completely cold.
- Remove heavy cookware.
- Keep the door closed.
- Select Bake 350°F.
- Start a timer.
- Record the preheat signal time.
- Note whether Bake and Broil elements or burners operate as designed.
- Repeat on another day under similar conditions if necessary.
Testing at 350°F gives a more useful baseline than comparing one test at 350°F with another at 450°F, because higher set temperatures naturally increase preheat time.

Oven always took 15 to 20 minutes
This could be normal for a hidden-bake design, larger cavity, or gas oven. Compare with manufacturer expectations before repairing.
Oven used to take 12 minutes and now takes 25
Investigate the heating element, igniter, supply voltage, sensor, and control.
Broil works but Bake does not
Focus on the bake element, bake wiring, or bake control circuit.
Oven reaches temperature but then cooking is too cold
Look more closely at the sensor, calibration, door sealing, and control cycling.
Gas oven igniter glows for a long time before flame appears
The ignition system requires diagnosis.
Oven slow since installation
Consider electrical supply, installation, voltage, and normal design characteristics.
What We Often Find During Service Calls
The most useful distinction is whether the oven has lost one of its heating sources.
An electric oven with one failed element may still eventually reach 350°F, so the customer understandably assumes both elements must be working. But if preheat time suddenly doubles, testing Bake and Broil separately can reveal that the oven is trying to heat the entire cavity with only part of its normal heating system.
On gas models, a similar complaint can occur when the igniter still glows but takes too long to open the gas valve. That is why we compare the current heating sequence with how the oven is supposed to operate rather than replacing a temperature sensor simply because the preheat is slow.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
- Time preheat from a completely cold oven.
- Test at 350°F.
- Keep the door closed.
- Remove heavy pans or stones.
- Check that the door closes completely.
- Inspect the visible gasket.
- Test Bake and Broil separately.
- Record any error code.
- Note whether the oven is gas or electric.
- Note whether the problem started suddenly or has always existed.
Check common appliance error codes
When Should You Call an Oven Technician?
Professional diagnosis is appropriate when:
- preheat time has suddenly increased significantly;
- oven takes 25 to 30 minutes or longer under normal conditions;
- Bake or Broil does not operate;
- gas burner is delayed;
- oven never reaches the selected temperature;
- door does not seal properly;
- error code returns;
- breaker trips;
- wiring smells burned;
- temperature remains significantly incorrect after preheat.
A technician can test bake and broil circuits, gas igniter, temperature sensor, electrical supply, wiring, and control-board outputs.
Is It Worth Repairing?
Slow preheat is often repairable. Common repair areas include the bake element, broil element, gas igniter, temperature sensor, wiring, door gasket, and control relay.
A slow-preheating oven does not automatically require replacement. The important part is identifying whether the long preheat is actually abnormal for the model and, if so, which heating function has been lost.
