Electric Cooktop Burner Not Heating but the Oven Works?

A cold burner can interrupt dinner even when the oven still heats normally. Before assuming the entire range needs replacing, identify exactly what stopped working: one zone, the outer ring of a larger element, or the whole cooktop.

This guide covers electric coil, radiant glass-top and induction surfaces. It does not cover gas-burner ignition. Use your model’s manual to identify the heating type; a smooth black surface alone does not tell you which instructions apply.

Stop First if There Is Damage or an Electrical Warning

Whirlpool’s electric-range manual warns against cooking on broken glass and explains that dark surface units may remain hot. Keep covers closed and leave internal testing to a qualified technician. These precautions apply before any ordinary settings or cookware check.

One Burner, One Ring or the Whole Cooktop?

Use observations you already have from normal cooking. You do not need to run every burner on High to describe the problem. Write down the zone’s position—such as front left—rather than just saying “the large burner.”

  • One zone stays cold while others heat: verify the selected control and, for induction, the pan. A repeat failure needs service; the symptom alone does not identify a replacement part.
  • The inner ring heats but the outer ring does not: check whether the larger element size was actually selected. Dual/triple-zone controls differ by model.
  • A radiant zone glows, goes dark, then heats again: cycling can be normal. Compare cooking performance, not the glow alone.
  • No surface zone responds: note any lock symbol, error or display change and whether the oven actually heats. That is a different service description from one failed burner.

On a freestanding or slide-in range, “the oven works” is useful context, not proof that every electrical function is healthy. If you have a separate wall oven and countertop cooktop, give the cooktop’s own model number. Also distinguish an oven light or clock that works from an oven that actually cooks.

Radiant Glass-Top: No Red Glow Does Not Always Mean No Heat

Whirlpool explains that radiant elements cycle on and off, including at High, to limit cooktop temperature. Low, warming or simmer settings may not glow visibly. A surface can remain hot during an off portion of that cycle.

For a dual or triple element, consult the control diagram to choose the intended ring size. If the correct setting is selected but part of the zone repeatedly fails to heat food during normal use, report that pattern for diagnosis. Do not lift the glass or remove a coil to inspect its connections.

Induction: Check the Pan Before Calling It a Failed Burner

Samsung’s induction guidance starts with magnetic cookware and a pan size that fits the selected zone. Some covered models also stop heating with an empty pan. Do not use an empty-pan heating attempt as a test.

When the pan is cool and away from the appliance, a magnet sticking to its base is a useful compatibility check. It is not the only requirement: follow both the cookware label and your cooktop’s minimum pan-size instructions. Not every stainless-steel pan is induction-compatible.

Choose a flat, undamaged base and center it on the intended zone as the manual directs. Note whether the problem started with new cookware and whether a suitable pan previously worked there. Record any pan-detection symbol exactly; its meaning varies by model. Lift cookware rather than sliding it across the glass.

Samsung recommends service when a correctly used zone still does not heat after the relevant checks. The same outward symptom can require different diagnosis on radiant and induction models, so identify the appliance before requesting parts.

What Can You Safely Check?

  1. Read the exact model’s manual and identify the heating type. Do this with the appliance off and cooled.
  2. Confirm which control operates the affected zone, which heat level is selected, and whether a multi-ring element is using the intended size.
  3. Check the manual for a control-lock indication. Whirlpool documents lockout as a possible cause on some ceramic-glass models; do not apply a generic unlock sequence to every brand.
  4. For induction, check the cool pan’s compatibility and required size. For any cooktop, use the cookware specified by its manufacturer.
  5. Record what happened during normal use, including any error. If the fault persists, arrange diagnosis rather than repeating high-heat or power-reset attempts.

Keep the task external: do not remove knobs or panels to reach wiring, interchange heating elements, measure voltage, or open an induction unit. If the problem began after installation, moving or electrical work, tell the installer or service provider before further use.

What to Include in a Cooktop Repair Request
