Did the Dryer Really Stop Early?
Modern dryers often use automatic moisture-sensing cycles. On these cycles, the control may shorten the cycle when the selected dryness level appears to be reached.
That means a dryer ending after 10 or 15 minutes is not automatically malfunctioning, especially with one or two lightweight items, already partially dry clothing, or mixed fabrics.
A useful first test is to compare Sensor Dry with a heated Timed Dry cycle. If Timed Dry runs for the full selected time but Sensor Dry repeatedly stops too early, focus first on sensing and cycle conditions rather than the motor.
1. Sensor Dry Stops Early but Clothes Are Still Wet
This is a common pattern and it is different from a dryer that physically overheats and shuts down.
Moisture sensors are usually metal bars near the front of the drum or lint-filter housing. Residue from dryer sheets can coat the sensor surface and interfere with moisture detection.
If the dryer behaves normally on Timed Dry but stops early on automatic cycles, check whether the load is extremely small, mixed fabrics are drying unevenly, the moisture sensor bars have residue, or the selected dry level is too low.
2. The Dryer Stops and Restarts After Cooling Down
This is one of the most useful diagnostic clues. The dryer starts normally, runs for five, ten, or twenty minutes, then stops. Pressing Start immediately does nothing or the motor only hums. After waiting 15 to 30 minutes, the dryer starts again.
That pattern makes motor overheating or a thermal-overload condition more suspicious. Many dryer motors have internal thermal protection. If the motor becomes excessively hot, the protection can open the motor circuit. Once the motor cools, the protection may reset.
The next question is why the motor is overheating. Possible reasons include worn motor bearings, excessive mechanical drag, weak motor winding, blower obstruction, drum or roller resistance, or restricted airflow contributing to excessive internal temperature.
3. Restricted Venting Can Cause Overheating
Before condemning an expensive motor or control board, check airflow. Lint buildup, a blocked exhaust hose, or restricted venting can make a dryer run hotter than normal and may lead to shutdown symptoms.
- clogged lint screen;
- crushed vent behind the dryer;
- lint buildup inside the exhaust duct;
- excessive vent length;
- too many elbows;
- blocked exterior hood;
- debris or nesting material in the vent path.
If the dryer feels unusually hot when it stops, airflow should be high on the diagnostic list.
Check the Exterior Vent
A dryer can look clean inside while the home vent is badly restricted. When the dryer is operating normally and it is safe to inspect the exterior termination, check whether the outside vent flap opens and whether airflow feels reasonably strong.
Weak exhaust does not automatically prove that the dryer itself is defective. The problem may be in the house vent system.
A Check Vent or AF Warning Is Important
Some dryers monitor airflow. Messages such as AF or Check Vent can point toward a clogged lint screen, crushed vent, restricted exhaust, or excessive vent length.
If your dryer stops or behaves abnormally and also displays an airflow warning, record the code before resetting anything.
4. The Dryer Is Extremely Hot When It Stops
This is different from an early Sensor Dry shutdown. Signs of overheating can include an unusually hot cabinet, very hot clothes, a hot-lint smell, excessive heat in the laundry room, long drying times despite high temperature, or a dryer that restarts only after cooling.
5. The Dryer Stops but the Display Stays On
If the display remains illuminated, remaining time is still visible, and controls still respond, incoming electrical power probably has not disappeared completely.
Possible areas to investigate include the motor, motor thermal protector, door switch or latch, control relay, wiring, and mechanical drag in the drum or blower system.
6. The Display Goes Completely Blank
If the entire machine loses power when it stops, the diagnostic path changes. Check whether the breaker tripped, the outlet still has power, the plug is secure, the power cord shows damage, or other appliances on the same circuit were affected.
If the breaker repeatedly trips whenever the dryer operates, do not continue resetting it. That requires electrical diagnosis.
7. Electric Dryers Can Have Partial-Power Problems
An electric dryer typically requires a 240-volt supply for normal heating operation. Depending on the fault, controls can appear normal and the drum can run while heat is missing.
That is not the same as the dryer completely stopping after five minutes. When possible, describe exactly which functions remain active.
Did the Heat Stop, or Did the Dryer Stop?
This distinction is critical. A dryer normally cycles heat on and off to control temperature. If the drum continues rotating, the timer continues, and airflow continues, but heat is not constant, the dryer may simply be cycling heat normally.
If the clothes never dry or the dryer has no heat at all, investigate heating performance separately.

8. Door Switch and Door Latch Problems
The dryer must know that the door is securely closed. A worn latch or failing door switch can interrupt dryer operation, especially when vibration moves the door slightly.
- dryer stops when the door vibrates;
- pressing on the door allows it to run;
- door feels loose;
- latch no longer holds securely;
- interior light flickers while the dryer runs.
9. Mechanical Drag Can Overheat the Motor
A dryer motor does more than turn the drum. Depending on the design, it may also drive the blower. If something creates excessive resistance, the motor has to work harder.
- worn drum rollers;
- seized roller;
- damaged idler pulley;
- blower wheel obstruction;
- object trapped between drum and cabinet;
- damaged drum support;
- motor bearing wear.
A dryer with excessive drag may start slowly, hum before starting, make squeaking or grinding noises, stop after heating up, and restart after cooling.

What if the Dryer Hums but Does Not Restart?
Suppose the dryer stops after ten minutes. You press Start immediately. You hear a hum, but the drum does not turn. After the dryer cools for twenty minutes, it starts normally again.
That pattern can indicate that the motor is energized but unable to start normally while hot. Do not repeatedly hold the Start button while a motor is stalled and humming. A stalled motor can overheat quickly.
10. Belt Problems Usually Look Different
A completely broken dryer belt normally prevents the drum from turning at all. On many models, a belt-switch system can also interrupt motor operation when belt tension is lost.
But if the dryer consistently starts normally, runs for 15 minutes, stops, cools, and starts again, a simple broken belt is less likely. The symptom sequence matters.
11. Control Board or Motor Relay Problems
Electronic dryers use relays and control circuitry to command the motor. An intermittent relay or control connection can cause mid-cycle shutdown, but a control board should not be the first part replaced simply because a dryer stops.
Before condemning the board, verify stable power, correct door-circuit behavior, motor temperature, mechanical drag, airflow, and any stored error codes.
Check for Error Codes Before Unplugging the Dryer
If the display shows an error, take a photo first. Some dryers can store faults related to airflow, temperature, motor operation, moisture sensing, communication, or power supply.
Repeatedly unplugging the dryer may erase useful information or temporarily hide an intermittent condition.
Does the Dryer Stop at Almost Exactly the Same Time?
Consistency matters. Stops at almost exactly 5 or 10 minutes can suggest a selected Quick Dry cycle, programmed cycle duration, or sensing behavior. Stops at different times depending on how hot the dryer gets make overheating more suspicious.
If the dryer stops only with heavy loads, consider mechanical load, motor condition, airflow, and load size. If it stops only on Sensor Dry, moisture sensing and load contact become more likely.
Small Loads Can Fool Moisture Sensors
A Sensor Dry system needs wet fabric to contact the sensing bars. A single lightweight garment may tumble without consistently touching them, so the control may conclude that the load is already dry and terminate the cycle.
If this is the only symptom, test with a normal-sized load or Timed Dry before replacing parts.
What if Timed Dry Also Stops?
This is one of the best diagnostic tests. If Sensor Dry stops early but Timed Dry runs normally, focus on the sensing and cycle side.
If Sensor Dry and Timed Dry both physically stop after approximately the same operating time, the problem is much less likely to be only the moisture sensors. Now investigate the motor, overheating, power, door circuit, mechanical resistance, and control.
Dryer Runs Longer When Empty
If the dryer runs normally empty but stops quickly with a full load, the extra mechanical load may be revealing a weak motor or excessive drum resistance. An overloaded dryer can also reduce airflow and increase heat buildup.

If the dryer runs longer on low heat but stops quickly on high heat, overheating deserves attention. Possible contributors include restricted airflow, a temperature-control issue, motor sensitivity to high cabinet temperature, or blocked blower and vent airflow.
What We Usually Check During a Service Call
For a dryer that stops after several minutes, the diagnostic order matters. First we determine whether this is an automatic-cycle issue or a true shutdown.
- Sensor issue: Timed Dry works normally.
- Airflow or overheating issue: dryer gets excessively hot or has weak exhaust.
- Motor issue: dryer stops when hot and restarts after cooling.
- Door issue: vibration or movement interrupts the door circuit.
- Power issue: display and machine lose electrical power.
- Control issue: correct power and inputs exist, but the motor command disappears unexpectedly.
Safe Checks You Can Do
- note whether the dryer stops on both Timed Dry and Sensor Dry;
- clean the lint screen;
- inspect the accessible vent hose for crushing;
- check exterior airflow if it is safe to do so;
- record any error code;
- note whether the display stays on;
- time how long the dryer must cool before it restarts.
When Should You Stop Using the Dryer?
Stop using the dryer and arrange diagnosis if it repeatedly overheats, you smell burning, the breaker repeatedly trips, the cord or outlet becomes unusually hot, the motor stalls and hums, the dryer only restarts after cooling, the symptom is getting worse, or you see smoke or electrical arcing.
When Should You Schedule Dryer Repair?
Professional diagnosis makes sense when the dryer consistently stops after a few minutes, both Timed Dry and Sensor Dry are affected, the dryer restarts only after cooling, the motor hums when you try to restart it, the dryer gets abnormally hot, airflow is good but the problem continues, door or latch behavior is inconsistent, the display loses power during the shutdown, an error code appears, or the dryer stops more frequently with heavier loads.
The most useful description for the technician is specific: the dryer runs for about 12 minutes, shuts off completely, will not restart immediately, then works again after cooling for about 20 minutes.
