Dryer Smells Like It Is Burning: When to Stop Using It

A hot or burning smell from a dryer is a stop-and-sort symptom, not a reason to keep running another cycle. The first decision is whether anyone needs to leave the building, not which part to order.

Use the odor, visible smoke, heat and fuel type to choose the next safe step. Do not open the cabinet, move a gas dryer, or restart the machine to reproduce the smell.

Which Smell or Warning Sign Matches?

  • Smoke, flame or sparking: Leave the area and call 911. Do not return to move the dryer or retrieve laundry.
  • Rotten-egg or sulfur odor near a gas dryer: Treat it as a possible gas leak. Leave immediately without operating switches or phones inside, call 911 from safety, then call the gas utility.
  • Hot plastic, rubber or electrical odor: Stop the dryer. If it is safe and there is no suspected gas leak, switch off its dedicated breaker; do not touch a hot, scorched or damaged plug or outlet.
  • New-appliance odor only: Some manufacturers describe a temporary first-use odor, but smoke, visible damage, strong electrical odor or an odor that persists still requires stop-use and service guidance for the exact model.
  • Musty or sour laundry: The odor may begin in the washer or wet clothing. That is a different symptom unless you also notice abnormal heat, smoke or a true burning smell.

The odor returned, the dryer became unusually hot or you found visible heat damage? Leave it off and review local service scope for dryer diagnosis

Stop First: When the Smell Is an Emergency

Visible smoke, flame, sparking, a strong electrical-burning odor or a rapidly heating room can indicate an active fire or electrical hazard. Leave the area and call 911. Do not pull the dryer away from the wall, open panels, throw water on an electrical appliance, or go back for clothing.

A rotten-egg or sulfur-like odor around a gas dryer is different from a hot-lint smell. Peoples Gas tells Florida customers who suspect a natural-gas leak to get everyone away immediately, avoid flames and anything that could create a spark, call 911 from safety, and then call its 24/7 emergency line at 877-832-6747. If another utility serves the address, use that utility’s emergency number after calling 911.

Do not turn a light, breaker, appliance or phone on or off inside a suspected gas-leak area. Do not try to close a valve, locate the leak, or unplug the dryer. Appliance repair begins only after emergency responders or the gas utility has declared the area safe.

Safe Next Steps When There Is No Smoke or Gas Odor

Leave the dryer off and allow it to cool. If there is no suspected gas leak and the plug and outlet are neither visibly damaged nor radiating heat, follow the model manual for disconnecting power or turn off the dedicated dryer breaker. Do not touch a damaged connection, disconnect a gas line or move the dryer where its cord, vent or gas connection could be strained.

  • Remove the lint screen only after the dryer is cool. Note whether it is heavily loaded, damaged or coated with residue.
  • Look inside the drum for a melted item, paper, rubber-backed mat or garment that was dried against its care label. Do not reach into hidden openings.
  • From a normal standing position, look for visible discoloration, a scorched cord, a deformed plug or a damaged outlet. Do not touch or test damaged electrical parts; contact a licensed electrician for outlet or house-circuit damage.
  • Write down whether the odor appeared at startup, after several minutes, near the end of the cycle or only with one load. Do not run a confirmation cycle after a burning smell.

Samsung advises cleaning the lint trap and exhaust vent and stopping use if a burning odor continues. Its guidance also separates smoke or gas odor from routine odor checks. LG notes that restricted airflow can raise dryer temperature and that a persistent burning smell on a dryer that is not new needs service. These manufacturer pages cover their own models and do not diagnose a different brand or a specific failed part.

Why Lint and Airflow Matter

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission explains that lint in the dryer or exhaust duct can block airflow, cause excessive heat buildup and contribute to a fire. It recommends cleaning the lint screen for each load, cleaning the vent and exhaust duct periodically, and having a qualified service person clean inside the dryer chassis. A homeowner lint-screen check does not make a dryer with a burning odor safe to restart.

CPSC: Overheated Clothes Dryers Can Cause Fires

The U.S. Fire Administration also advises professional installation and service, keeping the dryer vent uncrushed and unrestricted, and confirming that the outdoor vent opens during normal operation. After a burning smell, wait for the dryer to be cleared for use rather than running it to test the outside vent.

What the Odor Can and Cannot Tell You

Odor descriptions help route the call, but they do not identify a component. Hot lint can be associated with airflow restriction. A rubber-like smell may occur with a garment or drive symptom. A plastic or electrical smell can involve wiring, a connection or another heated material. The same words can describe different conditions, so internal inspection and electrical or temperature testing belong to a qualified professional.

A slight odor on the first cycles of a newly installed dryer may be described as temporary by the manufacturer. Confirm that advice in the exact model manual. If the smell is strong, persists, returns, accompanies abnormal heat or smoke, or the installation is uncertain, stop using the dryer and contact the installer, manufacturer or a qualified service provider.

What to Share Before Requesting Dryer Service

Prepare observations that can be collected without moving or restarting the dryer:

  • Brand and model number from an accessible label, purchase record or manual.
  • Gas or electric fuel type; if uncertain, say so instead of moving the dryer to inspect behind it.
  • Your description of the odor: hot lint, rubber, plastic, electrical, smoky, or rotten egg/sulfur.
  • Whether there was visible smoke, sparking, unusual cabinet heat, a tripped breaker, damaged clothing or an error code.
  • When the odor began, which cycle and load were involved, and whether the dryer is now safely off.
  • Any recent installation, move, vent work, outage or repeated long-dry-time symptom.

A photo of the display or safely visible exterior damage may help with preparation, but it does not confirm a diagnosis. Do not make a booking request until any fire or suspected gas-leak emergency has been handled and the area is safe.

Lint screen removed from a clothes dryer for routine cleaning
Clean the lint screen before or after each load as directed by the dryer manual. A clean screen does not rule out a restricted exhaust path.
Exterior dryer vent hood open while air leaves the duct
A vent hood that does not open during operation can indicate restricted exhaust airflow. Do not run a dryer again after a burning odor just to perform this check.
