Dryer Makes a Squeaking Noise While Running: What the Sound Can Tell You

A dryer that suddenly starts squeaking is usually telling you that one of its moving parts is no longer operating smoothly.

The sound may come from the front of the drum, rear of the drum, underneath the drum, belt system, roller or bearing, motor area, or even something trapped between the drum and cabinet.

The location and timing of the squeak can often narrow the diagnosis before the dryer is disassembled.

First Question: Does It Squeak Only for a Few Seconds?

This distinction matters. Some dryers may produce a brief squeak immediately after the drum begins moving.

If the sound lasts only a few seconds, disappears completely, does not return during the cycle, and has not become progressively louder, it may not indicate a serious failure.

A squeak that continues for several minutes or throughout the entire cycle is different and deserves closer attention.

Does the Squeak Repeat Once Per Drum Revolution?

Listen carefully. If you hear a steady squeak that matches drum rotation, the problem is probably connected to a part that rotates with or supports the drum.

Possible areas include:

  • drum roller;
  • roller shaft;
  • belt;
  • drum bearing;
  • front glide;
  • foreign object near the drum seal.

If the squeak becomes faster as the drum speeds up, that is another clue that the sound is mechanically linked to rotation.

If the Sound Comes From the Front

A squeak near the front of the dryer often points toward components supporting the front edge of the drum.

Depending on the model, these may include drum glides, felt seals, front bearings, or an idler pulley positioned toward the front or lower area.

Worn drum glides

Some dryers support the front of the drum on small plastic, felt, or composite glides. As they wear, drum position can change slightly, metal may begin contacting another surface, and squeaking or scraping may develop.

Possible clues include noise strongest at the front, a squeak that repeats with drum rotation, clothes occasionally catching near the front seal, and a sound that gradually becomes worse.

If the Sound Comes From Under the Drum

One of the first components to consider is the idler pulley. The idler pulley maintains tension on the dryer belt while allowing it to move smoothly.

As the pulley bearing or bushing wears, it may begin producing squeaking, chirping, high-pitched squealing, or intermittent noise.

Why an idler pulley can squeak before it fails completely

The pulley may still rotate even after lubrication or bearing surfaces have started wearing. At first, the dryer can run normally and the drum can turn normally while only a small squeak is heard.

Later, the squeak can become louder, the pulley may bind, the belt can overheat or wear, and the drum may eventually stop turning if the pulley seizes or the belt breaks.

If the Sound Comes From the Back

Many dryers use rear drum support rollers or a rear bearing system. Possible causes include a worn support roller, damaged roller shaft, rear drum bearing, belt damage, or drum support wear.

Drum rollers

A typical dryer drum may ride on two or more support rollers. Each roller turns thousands of times during normal use.

Over time, the bearing surface wears, the roller can become flat-spotted, the shaft can become dry or worn, or the roller may wobble.

A worn roller may produce a squeak, chirp, rumbling sound, or rhythmic thumping depending on how badly the roller is worn.

The Belt Can Make Noise Too

The dryer belt wraps around the drum and drive system. A worn belt may become glazed, cracked, stretched, frayed, or rub against nearby components.

A belt-related squeak often follows drum speed. Possible signs include a squeak once per revolution, visible cracking, rubber dust, intermittent slipping, or a drum that starts slowly.

However, the belt should not automatically be replaced just because a dryer squeaks. A noisy pulley or roller can make the belt appear to be the source when it is not.

Lint Buildup Can Affect the Belt and Pulley Area

Lint does not stay only in the lint filter. Over time, some lint can accumulate inside the dryer cabinet.

This matters because debris can interfere with moving components, and heavy internal lint accumulation is also a maintenance and airflow concern.

Cleaning only the lint screen does not remove lint already inside the cabinet. Internal cleaning should be performed safely with power disconnected.

A Foreign Object Can Sound Exactly Like a Bad Bearing

Before replacing mechanical parts, consider whether something is trapped around the drum.

Common items include:

  • coin;
  • screw;
  • bra wire;
  • zipper component;
  • paper clip;
  • small nail;
  • metal button.

Objects can become trapped near the front or rear drum seam and may create a squeak, scraping sound, ticking, or metallic chirp.

Does the Sound Change With the Load?

A heavy load puts additional force on drum rollers, glides, bearings, the belt, and the pulley.

If the squeak becomes much louder with wet towels or bedding, worn support components become more likely. That does not mean every squeaking dryer is overloaded; it simply means load size is useful diagnostic information.

Dryer squeaks even when empty

If the dryer squeaks with no clothes inside, the problem is unlikely to be caused only by load weight. That makes mechanical components such as a roller, pulley, belt, bearing, motor, or drum glide more suspicious.

A Simple Empty-Dryer Test

If the dryer is safe to operate:

  1. Remove all clothing.
  2. Run the dryer briefly.
  3. Listen to the noise.
  4. Add a small normal load.
  5. Compare the sound.

Think more about drum support, an overloaded drum, a roller, bearing, or glide.

Does the Squeak Change When You Press on the Dryer?

Do not push on a running dryer near moving or hot components. During diagnosis, technicians may notice that a noise changes when cabinet pressure or drum position changes.

A sound that changes with cabinet flex may involve drum alignment, a glide, roller, or cabinet contact. This clue should be interpreted carefully because pressing on the cabinet can temporarily change several component positions at once.

The Motor Can Squeak

The drive motor turns the drum through the belt system. Motor bearings can eventually wear.

Possible motor-related symptoms include a high-pitched squeal, noise strongest near the motor location, sound that changes as the motor warms, a motor that struggles to start, the dryer stopping after running for a while, or a burning smell in severe cases.

A motor should not be diagnosed only from the sound. The belt, rollers, and idler pulley should be checked because their noise can travel through the cabinet and sound like it comes from the motor.

Why the Noise Can Disappear After the Dryer Warms Up

A common complaint is that the dryer squeaks when it first starts, then gets quiet.

This can happen because temperature changes slightly alter bearing clearance, pulley surfaces, belt flexibility, or roller movement. The fact that the noise disappears does not necessarily mean the component is healthy.

If the noise is new and becoming progressively louder over time, it is worth checking.

The Opposite Pattern Matters Too

Sometimes the dryer starts quietly and begins squeaking after 10 to 20 minutes. That can point toward a component whose behavior changes as it heats up.

Possible areas include the pulley bearing, motor bearing, roller shaft, or belt. Make note of how long the dryer runs before the sound starts.

Squeaking vs Grinding vs Thumping

Squeaking or chirping

Common areas include the pulley, roller, belt, bearing, or glide.

Grinding

Grinding is more concerning for a seized roller, damaged bearing, metal contact, or foreign object.

Thumping

Thumping is often related to a flat-spotted roller, damaged belt, heavy load, object in the drum, or temporary drum shape after long storage on some designs.

Scraping

Scraping can point to an object in the drum seam, worn glide, or drum contacting the cabinet.

Should You Lubricate the Squeaking Part?

Not automatically. Household lubricants should not be sprayed randomly inside a dryer.

Problems include lint sticking to lubricant, oil reaching the belt, the wrong lubricant damaging components, and temporary masking of a worn bearing.

Some dryer components are designed as sealed or self-lubricating parts and should be replaced rather than lubricated. Diagnosis should come before lubrication.

When a Maintenance Kit Makes Sense

Some dryer designs use a group of wear components that age together. A maintenance kit may include a belt, idler pulley, and drum rollers.

That does not mean every squeaking dryer needs all of them. The exact model should be checked first.

If one roller or pulley is severely worn and the other wear components are the same age, replacing them together may sometimes make practical sense.

When You Should Stop Using the Dryer

Turn the dryer off and arrange service if the squeaking becomes:

  • grinding;
  • severe screeching;
  • metal-on-metal noise;
  • accompanied by a burning smell;
  • accompanied by smoke;
  • associated with the drum stopping;
  • associated with belt debris;
  • associated with excessive heat.

A small squeak may not be an emergency. A seized roller or pulley can eventually damage the belt or motor system.

What You Can Safely Check

Before scheduling repair:

  1. Remove coins and loose objects from the drum.
  2. Check the drum seams for visible foreign objects.
  3. Run the dryer empty briefly.
  4. Compare the sound with a small load.
  5. Determine whether the noise comes from the front, back, or bottom.
  6. Note whether it occurs only at startup.
  7. Note whether it begins only after the dryer warms.
  8. Make sure the dryer is level.
  9. Check whether the load is unusually heavy.
  10. Clean the lint screen.

Information That Helps Before a Service Visit

Send the brand, complete model number, whether the dryer is gas or electric, where the sound seems strongest, whether it squeaks empty, whether it squeaks only with heavy loads, whether it starts immediately or after warming up, and a short video or audio recording.

Check common appliance error codes

A recording is especially helpful for dryer noises because chirping, scraping, thumping, and bearing squeal can sound very different.

What We Often Find During Service Calls

When a dryer squeaks but still turns normally, it is easy to assume that the belt is bad. In practice, the belt is only one part of the rotating system.

The more useful approach is to release the belt and inspect how each support component moves individually. A roller or idler pulley should rotate smoothly without binding, severe play, or roughness.

If a pulley or roller is beginning to seize, replacing only the belt can leave the original noise and can shorten the life of the new belt. The noise source should be confirmed before parts are ordered.

Is a Squeaking Dryer Worth Repairing?

Usually, yes. Common squeaking components such as the idler pulley, belt, support rollers, and drum glides are normal service parts on many dryers.

Repair decisions become more significant when the problem involves the drive motor, severe drum damage, extensive bearing or cabinet damage, or multiple major failures.

A squeaking dryer does not automatically need replacement.
