Check the Storage Bucket, Not Just the Ice Mold
Ice still sitting in the mold has not necessarily been released into the dispenser’s supply. Look for cubes in the storage bucket using the normal access described in your manual. Do not remove covers or force a frozen bucket to confirm this. When requesting service, distinguish “cubes in the mold” from “loose cubes in the bucket.”
A working water dispenser also does not establish that usable ice is available. Whirlpool’s troubleshooting separates the water-dispensing function from ice production. If the bucket is empty, follow the production guide linked above; this article focuses on ice already available to dispense.
Check the Selection, Lock, and Door Position
Select Cubed or Crushed as intended and use the dispenser normally according to the manual. Whirlpool notes that a dispenser lock can disable the controls while the refrigerator, ice maker, and dispenser light still have power. A lit panel does not mean the dispenser is unlocked. Use the model’s unlocking procedure rather than an online button combination for another refrigerator.

GE’s no-dispensing guidance starts with fully closed doors. Close them normally and note any door-open alert that remains. Do not tape down or hold a door switch to test the dispenser with a door open. A normal operating check should not require defeating a safety interlock.
Are the Cubes Loose or Frozen Together?
GE identifies frozen clumps in the bucket as a reason ice may not dispense or may come out only crushed. If your manual allows owner removal of the bucket, follow its shutdown, removal, cleaning, and reinstallation instructions. Support the bucket securely; a full container can be awkward to handle. Stop if it will not release normally.
Discard unwanted clumps using the permitted cleaning procedure. Do not attack packed ice with a knife or screwdriver; Whirlpool warns that sharp objects can damage the bin and dispenser. Do not pour water into the installed dispenser, apply a heat gun, or reach toward the crushing blades. If cleaning requires access beyond the removable container, arrange service.

A Humming Motor Does Not Prove the Bucket Is Engaged
Samsung explains that a bucket which is not fully seated may fail to connect with the motor that moves ice forward. You can then hear the motor without receiving ice. After a permitted bucket removal, reinstall it exactly as directed and confirm its normal seated position. Do not force a latch or rotate unfamiliar internal parts to make it fit.
If the bucket was washed using an approved procedure, dry it thoroughly before reinstalling it. Samsung notes that remaining moisture can freeze and recreate the blockage. Describe persistent humming, clicking, grinding, or silence to the technician; the sound alone does not identify the failed component.

Use the Ice and Container the System Is Designed For
GE advises against adding bagged ice or cubes from separate trays to its refrigerator ice bucket because they may not dispense correctly. It also warns against storing food or drinks in the ice bin. Follow the same model-specific storage instructions when investigating a jam; filling the bucket with replacement ice is not a reliable dispenser test.
Keep the glass from becoming overfilled and leave the dispenser opening clear. GE notes that backed-up ice can jam the chute. If the opening appears blocked, stop dispensing and follow the manual’s cleaning instructions. Do not push a utensil up through the exterior opening while operating the paddle.

When the Problem Returns or Began After a Move
A jam that returns soon after proper cleaning deserves more than another round of clearing. GE notes that recurring frozen ice can involve leakage or overfilling. Record whether the ice is loose, fused into a solid mass, or surrounded by repeated frost. Ask for diagnosis rather than assuming the storage bucket is the only cause.
Tell the installer if dispensing has never worked since the refrigerator doors were removed and reattached. Samsung identifies door-connection checks as relevant to that history. Leave wiring, hinge covers, and plumbing connections to the installer or technician. This is particularly useful context for a newly delivered appliance, where the warranty service route may also apply.
